The proper camping cookware can make your camping experience more enjoyable. This guide will help you determine what camping cookware you need depending on the type of camping that you enjoy.

    Picking the Perfect Camping Cookware

  1. Step 1

First, think about your camping plans and how many people will be joining you on your camping trip. Will you be packing it in a backpack over a long hiking trip? Will you just use it for the weekend in your tent at the lake? Or will you be in an RV with all the modern conveniences, including a propane or electric stove?

  2. Step 2

If you are planning a hiking trip, your best cookware choice would be a nesting set of lightweight cookware. Look for thin aluminum or stainless steel sets, preferably with cups and silverware as part of the set. Check to see how many people the set will serve. You may have to carry more than one cookware set if you have a large group. This type of cookware can be dented or damaged easily, so you will need to be careful with it.

  3. Step 3

If weight is not an issue, the absolute best camping cookware is seasoned cast iron. Not only is cast iron durable, but it provides an even heating surface and gives you a true "roughing it" or pioneer feeling. Cast iron holds heat well, so it is great for cooking on campfires that may vary in temperature while you are cooking. Cleaning cast iron is incredibly easy, as any grease or food residue just wipes off, and then you can quickly clean it with hot water and soap. Don't let water or soap sit in your cast iron cookware for too long, and don't store foods in your cast iron. One downside to cast iron is that foods will stick if the pan is not seasoned properly.

  4. Step 4

If you plan on relaxing in your RV and have a modern stove (propane or electric), you can use regular cookware designed for your home. If you do plan on using the outdoor fire pit, it would be best to use a cast iron pan or a cast iron grill.
