Step 1
Food is an expense that many seem to compromise on because we’re hungry and we don’t have time to prepare. While this is true in today’s world, we don’t have to spend a fortune. The first thing to do is eliminate eating out as much as possible. Instead of going out, invite friends over and have them bring a dish. If you prepare some sandwiches or salads the night before, you can easily grab something to eat the next day when you're hungry but too busy to make anything.

Step 2
Water can be conserved by taking showers instead of baths. Don’t allow the water to run unless you are using it to rinse. This simple change of habit can save you a lot of money. Not only water for washing but water to drink can be conserved while not shortchanging your body of fluids. Buy a good water filter and fill up your drinking bottles to bring to work with you rather than buying bottled water.

Step 3
If you own a home, consider renting out a room to bring in some extra income. With careful screening you can have extra income and at the same time help someone out.
-
Step 4
Instead of buying the high priced retail items, check out your local thrift store and see what bargains you can find. While you may not find everything that you need, you will find treasures at a fraction of what you would pay retail. Not only are thrift stores good but sites such as FreeCycle are great for people who are looking to give things away.

Step 5
Instead of spending a fortune on movie tickets, movie popcorn and soda, try either renting a video or even borrowing a video from the library or a friend. Have a movie night at yours or a friend's house. Someone brings the popcorn and someone brings the drinks. It is less expensive and you will have the comforts of home.

Step 6
In a great economy we can afford to spend loosely. Is it a good idea? Not really. Like the old saying goes, “save for a rainy day.” It’s not too late to start. Today is the perfect time to learn to live frugally.
