Picking a dance fitness program may seem overwhelming at first, with the many kinds of dance classes available today. However, with a bit of forward thought, we'll show you how to pick the perfect dance fitness program for you in the steps below.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assess your fitness level realistically. Think about the level of exertion you can comfortable handle. If you aren't fit and just starting in dancing, start slowly. Pick a beginner's program. For a fun introduction to dance on any level, you may even want to first try that Richard Simmons classic "Sweatin' To the Oldies." That's appropriate for any fitness level and definitely teaches you some basic dance moves!

  2. Step 2

Decide how you want to learn dancing. Your options are open. You have dance videos and dvds, private instructors, group classes, and personal trainers. The kind of dance fitness program that you pick should be the one that is easiest for you. We tend to stick to those that are an easy habit to form.

  3. Step 3

Choose your favorite kind of dance. This is the fun part. You can sample all kinds of dancing if you do not have dancing experience. Just some of the options open to you are hula dancing, salsa, belly dance, modern, tap, jazz, ballet, crunk, ballroom, jazzercise and hip hop! You can go to a studio that doesn't make you sign up for a group of classes. Taking one class at a time will tell you usually right away whether you have a passion for a particular kind of dance.

  4. Step 4

Take a few dance classes in your favorite kind of dance.

  5. Step 5

Examine and reflect if the dance class is making you happy, and if you are getting physical benefits from the dance work-out. Enjoying and improving are the most important factors to consider when sticking with a dance work-out routine or trying other kinds of dancing!

Tips & Warnings
  • Try checking out dance videos at your local library. It's a dance work-out for free!
  • Feel free to ask your dance teacher for help and advice. They're there to help you.
  • Never push yourself in a dance class. If a move is too difficult, skip it and get right back in the moves.
  • Consult your doctor before beginning any work-out routine.
