How to tie a monkey's fist

A Monkey's Fist knot was traditionally used by sailors and others as a heaving line. In some cases, a small rock was placed inside the knot to weigh it down. Now, this knot is also used to create an interesting necktie or decorative accent on jewelry.

Things You'll Need

• 12 to 18 inches of rope (necktie or gold chain)

Instructions

1. Turn your hand as if you were shaking another person's hand. Wind the rope around your hand three times. The rope should not be wound too tight, but should fit around your hand snuggly.

2. Wind the rope three more times horizontally through your middle and ring fingers.

3. Remove the rope from your hand carefully. Wind the rope three times around the inside bundle.

4. Tighten the rope until a small ball is formed.

5. If you are creating a Monkey's Knot to use as a necktie accent, place the tie around your neck first and then follow the steps above.
