Oprah has made the Best Life Diet famous, including the diet's Hunger Scale. This simple chart teaches dieters to rate their hunger levels and to use these cues in deciding whether to eat, or wait until later. The Best of Life Diet hunger scale is also used to determine the best stopping point when eating a meal.

Instructions

    • 1

Analyze your comfort level during a meal, or when you are thinking about having a snack. Think in terms of the Diet for Life Hunger Scale, with 10 being completely stuffed, so full you feel almost sick and 1 being so hungry your stomach is churning and you might even feel faint.

    • 2

Become familiar with the top end of the Best Life Hunger Scale. After 10 is 9, where you are quite full and may need to loosen your clothes for comfort. An 8 means you are feeling uncomfortable and a bit bloated, and you rank a 7 when you're just past full and slightly uncomfortable.

    • 3

Learn the nuances of the middle segment of the Best Life Diet Hunger Scale. Rate yourself a 6 when you are satisfied and experience no discomfort or hunger for more food. Take a 5 when you're satisfied but feel like you could eat a little more. If you're at 4, you are feeling the beginning hunger signals and are interested in a snack.

    • 4

Get to know the bottom side of the hunger scale, with 3 representing stomach-rumbling hunger. At level 2, you are uncomfortable, quite hungry, and sometimes irritable. When you hit the bottom of the scale at 1, you're almost faint with hunger and the most hungry you've ever felt. You should avoid this level of hunger.

    • 5

Only eat when you find yourself a 4, 3, 2, or 1 on the Best Life Diet Hunger Scale. If you want to lose weight, never eat when you are a 5 or higher. Allow yourself to eat until just satisfied or slightly hungry. Wait at least an hour to have a small snack if you feel hungry again. Sometimes, your hunger will go away as your body digests what you've just eaten.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never under eat or stay in the 1-3 range on the hunger scale just to lose weight.
