Everyone wants to be healthy and part of being healthy is to eat right. Eating right also plays a major part in diet and weight control. Many experts believe that one step you can take in eating right and staying healthy is by controlling the portions you eat. This means you should eat smaller portions of your foods and by eating smaller portions, you can eat more often. Actually, many dieting and nutritional experts are now saying that people should eat often. Instead of eating three big meals a day, you should break these meals into smaller meals and smaller portions. While you are eating more frequently, you are feeling like you are eating more, even though your portion sizes are smaller. This also helps your digestive systems to work better. Here are some simple ways in which you can learn how to eat smaller portions.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dishes of various sizes
  • Bowls of various sizes
  • Pretty glasses to drink from
  1. Step 1

Begin by examining the plates and bowls you own. How big are they? Do you own these in many sizes or do you own mostly larger ones? The size of the plates and bowls you eat off of can very well determine how much food you eat. If you eat off a large plate, it will take more food to fill it. Yet, if you choose a smaller plate, you can fill it as you normally would the larger plate and help to trick your mind into believing you are eating more. If you do not have many smaller size bowls and plates, you should buy some and while you are at it, buy some in pretty styles and color choices to help make your eating experience more pleasant.

  2. Step 2

Add a glass of water to every meal you eat. Place the water in a pretty glass and begin sipping at it as soon as you sit down to your meal. This will help fill you up and help you to actually eat less. Plus, most people aren't drinking the amount of water they need anyway, so this is a win-win situation for your body.

  3. Step 3

Place small amounts of the food onto your plate. Don't just keep adding extra spoonfuls. Pay attention and only add what you really need to eat to be full. Don't forget to add helpings of the vegetables and the fruits, then slowly begin eating. Taste the food and don't rush.

  4. Step 4

Don't totally stop eating the foods you love. Sure cookies are not good for you, but what would a world be without a cookie once in a while? When you are really craving one, limit your portion to one or at least two and then stop. Put the cookie jar away, out of sight. It is better to eat small amounts of something you love and something you are craving, then to keep pushing aside that feeling of want for many days. Eventually, your craving will win and you may completely cave by eating a half of bag of cookies instead of limiting yourself.

  5. Step 5

Instead of eating three huge meals a day, eat three smaller meals and add two or three small snacks into the mix. This will allow you to continuously eat, allowing your body to continue to have energy and to keep you going throughout the day without feeling hungry. Make this a habit.

  6. Step 6

Take the word "diet" out of your vocabulary. Add the words proper eating, vegetables, portion control and a new way of living and eating healthier.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn how to drink more water during and before meals to help fill you up
  • If you have a craving, give into it. Just don't go overboard. Eat one or two cookies, not half a bag.
