Not sure how to align your head for Pilates exercises? Proper alignment of your head and neck is important to prevent injury and promote good posture. Follow these steps to properly align your head and neck for all Pilates exercises.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position your head correctly. Do not slouch your shoulders or lead with your chin. Center your head directly above your shoulders, where you feel that your ears are aligned with your shoulders.

  2. Step 2

Position your neck properly. Never arch your neck; instead, keep it flat and try to lengthen your neck.

  3. Step 3

Slightly tuck your chin towards your neck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use imagery to help you achieve proper posture and positioning in Pilates. For example, when lengthening the neck, try imagining a long rod extending up from your tailbone through the crown of your head.
  • If you get any persistent muscle pains, stop your exercise regimen and consult your doctor or physical therapist.
