Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a rare condition in pregnancy described as extreme nausea and vomiting. This can cause an inadequate intake of essential fluids and foods which can be harmful to both mother and baby. Diagnosing hyperemesis gravidarum early in pregnancy is critical to provide proper intervention.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Doctor or Midwife
Step1
Know that the symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum usually appear between weeks two and twelve, sometimes before the mother even knows she is pregnant. The most common symptoms are excessive nausea and vomiting. The nausea and vomiting can be so extreme that severe dehydration takes place. If left untreated, it can cause harm to both mother and baby.
Step2
Be aware that the doctor can make a diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum by conducting a clinical evaluation, looking over the mother's history and looking for symptoms such as dehydration, extreme weight loss and excessive nausea and vomiting. The doctor will also evaluate how the illness is affecting the daily tasks in the her life. Mothers with hyperemesis gravidarum will not be able to get much done on a daily basis.
Step3
Know that if you are diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, your doctor will take appropriate measures to get you well. If you are severely dehydrated, you may be hospitalized to restore fluids and electrolytes through intravenous fluids.
Step4
Be aware that after your fluids have been replaced, you may be put on an anti-emetic drug to control the nausea and vomiting.
Step5
Know that once the nausea and vomiting are under control, you should try to begin nourishing your body with a diet high in carbohydrates and low in fat. This seems to be the best diet for a woman with hyperemesis gravidarium. You may also need to take other nutritional supplements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Eat something light before you go to sleep so that the food can neutralize the stomach acids.
  • Call the doctor immediately if you have extreme nausea and vomiting.
  • Do not take over the counter medication for nausea or vomiting.
