Jock itch is caused by a fungal infection. The most noticeable symptoms are an itchy feeling and redness of the inner thighs, buttocks and genitals. These areas may also have a rash along with a burning sensation, cracking, flaking or peeling.

If you have athlete’s foot in addition to the symptoms listed above, that could be a sign as well. That’s because the fungus that causes athlete’s foot also causes jock itch and can spread from the foot to the groin.

The fungus that causes jock itch thrives in heat and moisture. So if you sweat a lot and then feel itchy, that could be the organism spreading on your body causing infection.

Men who wear tight underwear or tight athletic supporters that aren’t washed after each use are more susceptible. People who spend a lot of time in warm, humid weather are at a higher risk as well.

Jock itch can also be spread through sexual intercourse.
People with impaired immune systems are more at risk.
