Whether you're serving appetizers or a bread course, spreads are a great way to add additional flavor. Not all spreads are created equal though. Some can be filled with fat and calories. Thankfully, it's easy to pick spreads that are healthy.

From Quick Guide: Spreads
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose low-fat cream cheese spreads. Many grocery stores now carry many different flavors ranging from regular to onion flavor. These make a great base for other spreads.

  2. Step 2

Try vegetable based spreads. Something as simple as roasted garlic would be great with an Italian dish. Of course, you could also combine tomatoes, caramelized onions, and roasted garlic in a food processor for a more flavorful spread.

  3. Step 3

Look for high fiber spreads. A great example of this would be hummus. Hummus is high in fiber because it is made with beans. It's also low in calories.

Tips & Warnings
  • When choosing high fiber spreads, make sure they are low in bad fats.
