How to Maximize a College Visit

When trying to decide which college to go to, college visits can help you make that decision. In order to get the full experience and feel of a college, you need to do more than sit with an adviser and a basic tour. Use these steps in order to get the most out of your visitation.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Academic adviser. Normally, a college visit starts with a meeting with an academic adviser. This will allow you to determine whether or not a college is right for you academically. They can also help you find clubs/organizations that you might like.
Step2
Campus tour. These tours are general group tours. You can be in a group of 10 to 30 different people. Although it isn't ideal, it's a good overview of the campus. If you have questions, ask your tour guide.
Step3
Explore on your own. Most of the tours take you outside the buildings and rarely get to go inside and explore. After your "official" tour, take some time to get out there and explore a few places on your own.
Step4
Talk to the students. If you know anybody that goes to the school, ask them to meet with you. You can get their opinions and advice about the college.
Step5
Eat on campus. If you're going to be living on campus, you need to see how the food is. This shouldn't make a big impact on which college you choose, but it's a good experience.
Step6
Overnighter. If you know someone that lives on campus, see if you can stay a night to get a good feel of college life. You can shadow the student, sit in their classes, have fun and spend the night in the dorm.
Step7
Student center. Make a stop at the student center. This is where a lot of students spend their time.
Step8
Talk to a professor. If you ever get the opportunity to speak with a professor, do it. It's a great way to find out what the college is like from a different perspective. Although some professors will be honest, others may be biased because they work there.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a note of anything you may want to see or do before going on campus. Add to the list as you think of new things.
  • Go with a friend or family member. You can be overwhelmed if you go by yourself.
