Things You'll Need:
- Nursing shirts
- Nursing cover
- Nusring bra
- Nursing pads
-
Step 1
Build confidence at home first. Make sure that baby has a proper latch and that you are competent with a variety of nursing positions. Ensuring that both you and baby are comfortable breastfeeding at home is the best way to ensure successful nursing while on the go.
-
Step 2
Wear a good quality nursing bra and become familiar with how it works. This will allow baby easier access when you are out in public. Also, put nursing pads in the bra, so that leaking milk doesn't get your shirt wet and cause you unnecessary emabarrassment.
-
Step 3
Wear shirts that you can adjust easily to accommodate baby. Specially designed nursing shirts are the most simple and discrete to use. Also, shirts that you can pull down from the top to allow baby easy access, as well as button-down blouses, are typically nursing-friendly. Avoid wearing tight shirts, or shirts or outfits that would be challenging to adjust without preserving your modesty.
-
Step 4
Invest in a breastfeeding cover-up, and bring it with you. These covers tie around your neck and allow you to nurse baby discretely, since they stay in place and shield baby from view.
-
Step 5
Know where you're going, and have a back-up plan ready, just in case. If you get somewhere and find you are just too nervous to nurse out in public, head to your back-up spot. This could be a women's lounge area, which often have comfortable chairs for breastfeeding moms, a bench in an out-of-the-way spot, or even your car.

on 12/1/2008 try wearing a modest middle. It's a new nursing tank top/undershirt that makes any shirt you own into a nursing shirt. You can wear form-fitting shirts, button up shirts, any shirt and still (1) keep your modesty an (2) have the easiest access to your breast for nursing. www.modestmiddles.com
