How to Make Graham Saffron Waffles

These hearty breakfast waffles are made from graham flour, giving them a dense texture, and a flavor slightly reminiscent of graham crackers. Saffron may sound like an unusual ingredient for waffles, but when combined with the other ingredients, it gives them a delicate pleasant taste.

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard electric waffle iron
  • Medium plastic mixing bowl with top
  • Small ladle
  • 2 cups whole wheat graham flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 milk
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 3 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 6 strands saffron
  • Cooking spray (as needed for iron)

    Prepare the Batter

  1. Step 1

    Pour two cups of whole wheat graham flour into a mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar, baking powder and salt.

  2. Step 2

    Grind or chop up the 6 strands of saffron as much as possible. Add to the bowl. Put the top on the mixing bowl and shake until all the dry ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

  3. Step 3

    Crack two eggs into a separate bowl and whisk until integrated. Add to the mixing bowl and stir in the milk until the liquid is absorbed. Mixture will be stiff.

  4. Step 4

    Add the olive oil, and stir again until mixture is smooth and consistent throughout.

  5. Step 5

    Using you spoon, verify that there are no clumps of dry mixture stuck to the bottom of the bowl, or to the spoon. If there are, then carefully work them into the mixture until they are gone.

  6. Cook the Waffles

  7. Step 1

    Plug in the iron and let it get fully hot. Spray your favorite cooking spray onto the inner surfaces of the iron.

  8. Step 2

    Using a small ladle, pour some batter the lower plate of the the iron. The bottom of the plate should be completely covered with batter. Be careful not to overfill it. Close the lid.

  9. Step 3

    The waffles should be done in 4 or 5 minutes. Test the surface of the waffle with a spatula. The surface should be firm and golden brown.

  10. Step 4

    Remove waffles with spatula and serve immediately. Garnish as desired with butter, margarine, whipped cream, syrup or peanut butter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cinnamon may be added to mix if desired.
  • If you have any batter left over, you can store it in the refrigerator and use it the next day.
  • Never use a metal fork or spatula to remove waffles from iron to avoid risk of electric shock
