Steady, but moderately paced walking, is a fantastic way to get in shape and lose weight. Walking at a moderate pace burns 300 to 500 calories per hour.

Things You'll Need:

  • Walking shoes
  1. Step 1

Invest in a good pair of walking shoes. High quality running shoes also make excellent walking shoes. Although shoes can be purchased online, it is highly recommended to purchase the shoes from a running store. A local sports store will have trained staff on hand that can help you choose the proper pair of shoes according to your fitness goals, along with properly fitting the shoes to your feet.

  2. Step 2

Wearing comfortable clothing is also important when starting an exercise program. Although cotton clothing absorbs water efficiently, it takes quite a long time to dry out once it gets wet. Choose tops and bottoms that are made of material that quickly wicks moisture away from your body. Sporting goods stores and running stores have a wide variety of appropriate clothing to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Start off by walking for up to 30 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week. As your fitness level increases, gradually increase the number of days and the amount of time spent walking. As your stamina builds up, work your way up to walking for one hour, 4 to 5 times per week, or as your schedule permits.

  4. Step 4

Advanced walkers can add lightweight hand weights to their walking routine for a more challenging workout. This is a terrific way to build upper body strength.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some optional equipment to use is a -edometer with or without a heart rate monitor.
  • Make sure to stay properly hydrated. Bring a water bottle along on every walk, and take a sip of water at least every 10 to 15 minutes, or as needed.
  • If you have difficulty breathing while walking, slow down your pace. You should be able to hold a conversation, without difficulty, while walking at a moderate pace.
