How to Set Disk Quotas

Follow these step by step instructions to Set up disk quotas for your disk volume. These steps will enable the user to set limits on the amount of space that users are allowed use.

  1. How to Set Disk Quotas

    • 1

      Double click on "My Computer". This will usually be on your desktop. If it is not, click once on the "Start Menu". Look for "My Computer" and click once on it. It is important to note that you will not see the “Quota Tab” if you are not an administrator or if the disk is not formatted with the NTFS file system.

      Click once on your local disk. The disk will have a letter next to it. For instance, it may look like this: Local Disk (C:).

      Right click on the local disk or any disk volume you want to set disk quotas for.

      Go to properties and click once on it.

      Click once on the “Quota Tab” in the “Properties Dialog Box.”

      Check the “Enable Quota Management” box by clicking inside the box next to “Enable Quota Management.”

      Click inside the circle in front of “Limit disk space to.”

      Fill in the amount you want to limit disk space to inside the rectangle to the right of “Limit disk space to."

      Click the drop down list to right of the second rectangle next to “Limit disk space to” and select the specific units you want by choosing KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, or EB.

      Fill in the amount of units you want to set the warning level to inside the rectangle to the right of “Set warning level to”.

      Click the drop down list to the right of the second rectangle next to “Set warning level to” and select the specific units you want by choosing KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, or EB.

      Next, select the quota logging options for the disk volume by clicking inside the box(es) in front of “Log event when a user exceeds their quota limit,” and “Log event when a user exceeds their warning level” that specify the option(s) you want.

      Click apply at the bottom right of the "Quota tab".

      Press OK when the disk quota message pops up to enable the quota system. This will take several minutes.

      Click OK to close.
