Step 1
Backpack: When choosing a backpack, take into account how long your trip is. A 2 to 3 night outing requires you to carry much less than a 2-week backpacking trip. The bigger the backpack, the heavier, so try to find a backpack in you price range that is made from light yet durable materials. You will also want to make sure the pack fits your body well. If you go into a outdoor adventure store, the employees will help to fit you.

Step 2
Tent: The tent is an important consideration since it is your portable shelter while on your trip. You want to make sure it is big enough for you but also not too heavy because, in backpacking, every ounce counts. When buying your tent, also take into account the weather you plan to backpack in. Tents are usually rated based on the weather, so if you plan to backpack in winter, make sure to find a tent that is rated for cold weather.

Step 3
Clothes: Backpacking requires comfortable attire that keeps you warm in cool weather but allows your skin to breathe. The best way to achieve this is to bring multiple layers starting with a wicking under-layer and ending with a waterproof but breathable outer layer. This way, you will be prepared for most weather conditions.

Step 4
Stove: Buying a backpacking stove is important if you plan on having anything warm to drink or eat while on your adventure, because many parks and forests prohibit wood fires. You will want to find a lightweight stove that doesn't take up too much room in your pack. Stoves require fuel, so make sure that whatever stove you choose, you are able to refuel it on your trip.

Step 5
Boots: Backpacking involves a lot of wear and tear on your footwear, so most people recommend a sturdy pair of hiking boots. When choosing the right pair for you, make sure that there is room for your socks (liners and outer) and that the boots are waterproofed. Nothing is more uncomfortable than cold, wet feet! Make sure and break your boots in before your trip so you don't get blisters. Good luck!
