Things You'll Need:
- Hemp cord (about 8 feet)
- Bead with a hole large enough for the hemp to pass through
- Scissors
-
Step 1
You will need three lengths of hemp or a similar cord, such as jute, twine or leather. Measure one piece to wrap around your neck, leaving a few extra inches just in case. If you want a loop at the end of the necklace, double the length of this piece, fold it over and tie a loop at the end. This will be the middle string in your necklace. Cut two more pieces at length of about three times the middle string.
-
Step 2
Strings tied, ready to start weaving.Tie the strings together. Arrange them so the shorter string(s) are in the middle and the longer ones are outside. You can also tape the knotted strings to a book or a table for stability.
-
Step 3
The square-knot weave.Start by taking the right string, crossing it over the left string, under the middle string and over the left string again.
-
Step 4
Pull the knot tight.
-
Step 5
Repeat the process, starting with the left string this time. Do the opposite of the first knot, taking the left string, crossing it over the right string, under the middle string and over the right string again. Alternate starting on the left and right to make a flat weave, or continue looping on the same side to make a spiral pattern.
-
Step 6
When you reach the middle section of the necklace, string on a bead or other decorative object. Tie a knot around the bead and continue weaving.
-
Step 7
Tie a knot at the end that will go through the loop at the other end to fasten the necklace around your neck.
