Choose a design for your knitted object.

Find a knitting pattern that will tell you how to create your design. Patterns can be found on the Internet or at your local yarn store. Read through the pattern to make sure that you understand the entire project before getting started.

Cast on the number of stitches indicated in your pattern.

Knit according to the directions. As you knit the stitches as indicated in the pattern, you will begin to see the pattern emerge in your project.

Cast off your stitches according to the directions in your pattern.

Tips & Warnings
If you are unfamiliar with any of the knitting abbreviations used in the pattern, then you should consult with a basic knitting book or glossary.
If the pattern is written in a chart then you might wish to use a straight edge, such as a post it note, to keep track of which chart row you are working on.
If the pattern repeats across a row then it might be useful to use stitch markers to mark the beginning and end of each design repeat.
