How to Dress for Divorce Court

  1. Step 1

Your attorney will be able to give you advice on what to wear. A lot will depend on the type of impression you want to have on the judge. However, it's safe to say that you will need to leave your jeans at home. If you believe that sex appeal will work for you in divorce court, you're completely wrong. Dressing in a conservative fashion will be much more successful.

  2. Step 2

Stiletto heels, open-toed shoes, miniskirts and low-cut shirts are not appropriate in divorce court. You will want to wear a knee-length skirt or dress that isn't too flashy. Loud colors, like red, should be avoided. Wear a bra and pantyhose, but make sure your bra or slip isn't showing.

  3. Step 3

While jeans should never be worn in court, men can wear nice khakis and slacks with a belt. Low-rise pants that show your underwear will not leave a good impression with the judge. Hats should also be left out of the courtroom. A suit, jacket and tie is the best option. If you don't own a jacket, a suit and tie will also work.

  4. Step 4

When it comes to make up and jewelry, it should also be in a conservative manner. While you still may want to cover the circle under your eyes or the annoying pimple, the bright blue eyeshadow should be avoided. Wear minimal amounts of jewelry as well. Having a ring on each finger, large earrings and a flashy necklace in divorce court won't win you any points and should be left at home.

  5. Step 5

Crazy hairdos should also be avoided when going to divorce court. Keep your hair a natural shade, the courtroom is a serious place and judges are often conservative. You will want to appear professional and look like an adult rather than a high school kid.

Tips & Warnings
  • Navy is always a safe color when it comes to going to divorce court. You should also not scrutinize too much about your outfit. Your judge isn't going to rule against you because they don't like your tie or purse. Be comfortable with what you're wearing. You'll appear nervous if you constantly have to adjust your outfit.
