Things You'll Need:

  • Since this kick is mostly used for self-defense, and would most often occur in public, there is little you will need other than your striking leg.

How to Do a Pushing Front Kick in Soo Bahk Do

  1. Step 1

Bring your hands up into a standard fighting stance, in order to help your balance. Assuming that you'll be kicking with your right leg, you should bring your right leg up near to your left knee. Your thigh should be parallel with the ground. Inhale sharply, and hold your breath until you strike.

  2. Step 2

You should not leave your striking leg at the ready position for long. As soon as your striking leg reaches the ready position, near your knee, you should strike, exhaling forcefully as you do so. Your kicking leg should extend directly in front of you. You should be using the flat of your foot, near your heel, to actually strike your opponent.

  3. Step 3

You will treat the kick as though you are kicking through your opponent. For example, instead of targeting your opponent's front midsection, you will actually be imagining your target to be on the other side of your opponent. You should try to kick through your opponent in order to reach your target. Always focus through your target, as though you're trying to hit something on the other side of it.

  4. Step 4

Unlike many other martial arts kicks, you will not be bringing your leg back to the ready position after you strike. Since you are attempting to kick through your opponent, your leg will follow the natural path of the strike, until your foot is resting on the ground. This will allow you to place more force behind your strike, and force your opponent back further.

Tips & Warnings
  • In order to get the most power possible out of your strike, you should exhale forcefully only during the last few inches of leg travel before your striking leg makes contact with the target. Remember, always focus through your target, as though you're trying to hit something on the other side of it.
  • Since this strike doesn't allow your striking leg to return to the ready position after the strike, be aware that the majority of your weight will be place on your striking leg when it contacts the ground. Always guard against your opponent striking or sweeping that leg from under you, or you will be unable to stop yourself from hitting the ground.
