Step 1
Act quickly. It is extremely important that you not hesitate after your dog has eaten some chocolate. It takes approximately two hours for food to move from your dog’s stomach and into their intestine. The sooner you act the less likely the chocolate will have an adverse affect on your dog.
-
Step 2
Contact your veterinarian. As soon as you suspect that your dog has eaten some chocolate, you should call your veterinarian’s clinic. They will want to know how much chocolate your dog ingested and how long the chocolate was in their system.
-
Step 3
The first thing most veterinarians will recommend having your dog ingest a concoction that will make them throw up. They recommend this because the best way to make sure that a fatal amount of theobromine from entering the blood stream is to empty the contents of the dog’s stomach.
-
Step 4
The best way to make your dog throw up is having it swallow a cocktail that is half hydrogen peroxide and half water. After your dog’s stomach is empty continue monitoring it. You shouldn’t be too alarmed if your dog has diarrhea or some restlessness. However if your dog doesn’t appear to be getting any better or is starting to have seizure you should not hesitate to bring it to your veterinarian.

Step 5
The best way to prevent a dog from accidentally overdosing on chocolate is to make sure all of your chocolate and other candy is kept in a cupboard or container that your dog can’t open. Never leave candy bar wrappers laying about the house.
