Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao is a left-handed professional boxer with a record of 46 wins (35 knockouts) and three losses. His favorite weapon is the straight left, which he sets up with a quick right jab. He uses the momentum of his legs, hips and torso to gather much of the power behind his straight left, so you will need to improve your hand speed and balance before you attempt to master the straight left.

How to Throw an Effective Straight Left like Manny Pacquiao

  1. Step 1

Assume your traditional stance in front of a mirror. If you are a left-handed fighter, then you should lead with your right hand. Your left foot should be your behind your right..

  2. Step 2

While it isn't necessary for you to throw a right jab before you deliver a straight left, the jab will effectively set-up your straight left.

  3. Step 3

Keep your stance wide. Pacquiao is a power puncher who relies heavily upon a wide base from which to throw his combinations.

  4. Step 4

Much of Pacquiao's momentum is gathered from his legs. You should rotate much of your weight from the heel to the ball of your left foot. As you transfer your weight, rotate your hips toward the right side of your body. You should feel a strong twist in your torso.

  5. Step 5

Fire your left hand toward the chin of your intended target. Your palm should rotate about 90 degrees. Make sure it faces the ground just before impact.

  6. Step 6

As always, punch through your target. If your straight left is ideal, it will connect with the chin of your opponent and finish two-to-three inches past his face.

  7. Step 7

Quickly recoil your left arm and assume your traditional left-handed stance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice with a speed bag. In order to effectively develop Manny Pacquiao's straight left, you will need to improve both your hand speed and your lateral quickness.
  • Develop a quick right jab before you attempt to master the straight left. The better you set-up the straight left, the more effective the punch will become.
  • The most effective way to develop Pacquiao's straight left is to study video footage of his fights. Watch him throw the straight left in slow motion and then attempt to break-down his body mechanics.
  • Your right hand should actively protect your chin at all times. Remember, you are vulnerable to attack if you leave either side of your body unprotected.
