Hiking is a favorite recreational activity for people of all ages. It's a great way to get away and enjoy all the beauty nature has to offer us. But what do you do if you get lost? Here are a few tips that may help prevent you from getting lost in the woods.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Map of area you are hiking
  • GPS or compass
  • Pen and paper
  1. Step 1

Before leaving on a hike leave a message with a friend or someone who is responsible. Let them know the location where you will be going to, who you are going with and what time you expect to return.

  2. Step 2

Don't hike alone. Hike with someone or with a group.

  3. Step 3

Stick to hiking on designated trails. Don't wander off the trail because you might think it's a shortcut.

  4. Step 4

A useful thing to bring is a pencil and paper. Make notes of hills, streams, forks on the path, landmarks, or even the postion of the sun.

  5. Step 5

A map of the area is a great thing to have. A topographical map is the most useful because it shows the exact layout of the land.

  6. Step 6

If using a compass make sure you purchase a good one and learn how to use it well. Use caution when using a compass. Things like electrical wires, metal objects, even ore deposits can make the compass useless.

  7. Step 7

A GPS is another great tool to use. Make sure you use it to pinpoint your starting point before you head out so that it is already programmed into it. Make sure to carry extra batteries with you. Low batteries can sometimes block signals.

  8. Step 8

The most important thing to remember to prevent getting lost is common sense. Always know where you are and where you are going.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to bring fluids to keep you hydrated while out on the trail.
  • Also a first aid kit is a valuable thing to have while out on any excursion.
