How to Pick Window Cleaning Soaps

Picking a window cleaner soap may seem like a daunting task with the wide selection of cleaners to pick from. Don’t be fooled by clever advertising and attractive packaging. Commercial cleaners can be expensive and the truth is they are all basically the same. You can make your own window cleaner for a fraction of the cost with common household products.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Mix 1/4 cup of distilled vinegar with 2 cups of water.
Step2
Add a few drops of dish detergent and mix well. Dawn is a good choice. You want just enough detergent to cut the dirt and grime, but not enough to create suds. Suds are difficult to remove and create streaks or a haze on the window.
Step3
Fill a spray bottle with the cleaning solution. Shake to mix thoroughly.
Step4
To use, simply spray down windows and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth. You can purchase a micro-fiber cloth for this, but plain old newspaper works just as well.
Step5
Crumble a sheet of newspaper and dry the window, working in circular motions. Apply pressure as you dry the window and polish to a sparkling shine. Take care not to apply so much pressure that you damage the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Homemade window soap will leave your windows sparkling clean.
  • If the outside of the window has a buildup of bugs and dirt, simply scrub with a soft brush to remove the debris. Repeat the process, if necessary.
  • Although some recommend washing the outside of windows first, washing the inside first is actually easier. When it comes time to do the outside, it is easy to tell if the window is completely clean and eliminates climbing the ladder again later when you discover you missed a spot.
  • Never use an unstable object to stand on while washing windows. Not only might you take a dangerous fall, but you may break a window and cut yourself as well.
  • Always exercise caution when using ladders and do not stretch to reach a window that is out of your reach.
