How to Clean a Harmonica
Stevie Wonder and John Popper are just two famous harmonica players. Many artists call the harmonica their instrument of choice. These artists have to develop ways to clean and care for their harmonicas. Cleaning the harmonica is a simple process but may vary depending on the user.

1
Decide on the level of cleaning needed for your type of harmonica. Wood, plastic and metal harmonicas all have specific cleaning needs. Avoid using water on wood and metal harmonicas. Wiping wood harmonicas down with a cloth and lightly blowing through a couple of chords may be a sufficient cleaning. Plastic harmonicas can be cleaned with soap and water.

2
Disassemble the harmonica with the appropriate tools. Once the harmonica is disassembled, use a toothbrush on plastic and wood pieces. Pay special attention to the reeds. Use a soft brush to clean them. In addition to the brush, soap and water can be used for plastic pieces.

3
Put the harmonica back together again. Lightly blow a couple of chords into the harmonica so excess water or loose debris can escape through the reeds.
-
4
Determine the frequency of cleaning for an individual harmonica. A daily wipe-down with a soft cloth is always appropriate. Deep cleansing with hydrogen peroxide on plastic pieces should not happen more often than monthly. Overcleaning of the harmonica may diminish the sound and tarnish the instrument.

5
Avoid using a harmonica that has been played by someone else. This exposes you to potentially dangerous germs.
