Things You'll Need:

  • Waterproof sunblock
  • Protective clothing
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Know your skin type and purchase appropriate SPF Sunblock. If you are more susceptible to burning use a higher SPF such as 30 or 45. Regardless of your skin type, use a minimum of SPF 15 for sun protection. Make sure the sunblock you purchase is waterproof and note what the directions are as far as application and when to reapply.

  2. Step 2

Wear appropriate clothing to protect yourself. If it is cool you will probably be in a wet suit, however if it is a hot day you still may want to consider protective clothing. There are a number of lightweight clothing items available at sporting good stores that would be appropriate for water activities while protecting your from the sun.

  3. Step 3

Stay hydrated. It is important to stay hydrated so that your body does not become overheated. If overheating occurs, you may find yourself shredding protective clothing to cool off and this will make you more susceptible to sun damage. Additionally, reapplying sunblock will likely not be a high priority when you are in search of water to drink.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many people make the mistake of not protecting themselves from sun exposure on cloudy days or in the winter season. It is important to remember that clouds and cold do not protect one from the sun's dangerous rays. You are just as likely to be burned on a cloudy day as you are on a cloudless day. Do not mistake overcast skies and cool temperatures for a green light to go without sun protection.
