Disinfect a Sponge
Disinfect a Sponge

Sponges sop up more than messes. They also absorb germs and bacteria. This is a quick and easy way to kill much of these germs and extend the life of your kitchen sponge.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kitchen Sponge
  • Water
  • Microwave
  1. Step 1

Rinse your sponge several times, soaking it fully and wringing it dry.

  2. Step 2

Soak your sponge thoroughly and squeeze out only the excess water. Be certain the sponge is still wet.

  3. Step 3

Place the sponge in a microwave and microwave it on high power for one minute.

  4. Step 4

Let the sponge cool for several minutes before removing it from the microwave.

  5. Step 5

Resume using your sponge, confident that you are actually cleaning and not merely pushing germs around.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tongs or a similar utensil can be used to remove the sponge from the microwave.
  • The sponge will be very hot after being microwaved. Use caution and common sense when removing it.
  • It is very important that the sponge is wet all the way through before being microwaved. A dry sponge presents a fire hazard.
  • This technique will not extend the life of your sponge indefinitely and is not guaranteed to kill all harmful organisms. Be certain to replace your kitchen sponge regularly.
