The left hook is designed to be a quick and calculated knockout blow that gives the right handed boxer a lead power punch. The punch is intended to be thrown quickly and set-up with a straight right. This combination often catches the right-handed boxer's opposition off-balance. Learn to throw this punch only after you have mastered the left jab and straight right, and made significant progress with both your foot-work and balance. Most of the momentum gathered to throw a powerful left hook will come from your legs and hips, but do not discount your torso's involvement. Thus, it is important to keep your body limber and flexible, because you will often be forced to throw the left hook against your body's natural movement.

How to Throw an Effective Left Hook

  1. Step 1

As with most amateur boxers, you will want to practice your various punches in front of a mirror. This allows you to recognize and correct any flaws in your mechanics, such as foot-work or hip movement. Also, be sure to give yourself, at least, five square feet of movement.

  2. Step 2

    Assume your traditional right-handed stance.

  3. Step 3

Your back foot (or right foot) acts as the anchor for the left hook. This foot will not move throughout the entire sequence.

  4. Step 4

Transfer your weight to the left side of your body. You may need to shift your left foot to the left to accomplish the transfer.

  5. Step 5

Cock your left arm so that it forms a 90 degree angle. Your body should be slightly dipped to the left side at this point.

  6. Step 6

Pivot on the ball of your left foot. Use your left foot to shift your body's momentum to the right side of your body.

  7. Step 7

Your left leg, hips, and torso should now move toward the intended target (or the right side of your body).

  8. Step 8

As always, punch through your target. If your left hook is ideal, it will connect with the chin of your opponent and finish two-to-three inches past your opponent's face.

  9. Step 9

Quickly recoil your left arm and assume your traditional right-handed stance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice each step of the left hook individually. One flaw in your mechanics will result in a weakened, ineffective punch.
  • Work on your personal flexibility. The quick transfer of power from your left side to your right requires great flexibility in your legs, hips, and torso.
  • Your right hand should cover your chin at all times. Failure to do so will leave your face in severe danger, which may result in a knockout victory for your opponent. Improve your footwork before you learn the left hook. The left hook is often rendered ineffective if not coupled with experienced footwork.
