This classic fencing move, the challenging phrase familiar from a million movies, the "en garde" is easy to do, if you know the basic positioning of feet and arms.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fencing foil, epee or sabre
  1. Step 1

Position your body and feet correctly. Standing with your knees slightly bent for good balance, stand with your right pointing to the right and your left foot perpendicular to it. Your feet will be forming an L shape. Bend your right knee a little, making a slight lunge.

  2. Step 2

Position your arms correctly. Extend your right arm, the arm in which you hold the sword or foil, straight out from your shoulder. Bring your left arm up behind you in a curved shape.

  3. Step 3

Lunge sideways, to the right, and cry "En garde!"

Tips & Warnings
  • You should space your feet for good balance and agility, and use your left arm, curved behind, as balance for the right arm in front.
  • Never fence without adequate protective clothing and masks.
