Learning to tie a knot can be especially challenging for children. A child hasn't really reached a level of dexterity where knot tying is possible before the age of about five or six. Once they have reached this age, it's essential for kids to learn to tie knots during camping trips, at school and even sometimes at home. Read this article to learn to best way to teach your child to tie a knot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A shoelace or straight piece of rope or string

One of the first skills to master

  1. Step 1

Hold the piece of rope, string or lace flat out on the ground or on a surface.

  2. Step 2

Tell your child to bring each side down to make a curved shape, then cross one side over the other.

  3. Step 3

After they've crossed the sides, show them how to bring one of the long sides through the BACK side of the loop they've formed. You can also instruct them to bring the side through the front, just be consistent.

  4. Step 4

Show them how, when you pull the side through the loop, a knot is formed that gets stronger and better the tighter it is pulled.

  5. Step 5

From here, you could teach your child to make two loops, cross them over eachother, pull one bow through the hole in the middle and make a cute little knotted bow.
