Camping trips are lots of fun. Backpacking, swimming, biking, singing campfire songs, all these are great activities, but sometimes, you want something different. Here are three very fun campfire games to play:

From Quick Guide: Tenting on the Old Camp Ground
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • For Candle in the Wind
  • Candles
  • Squirt guns
  • Matches (adults only)
  • For Red Hunt in October (Okay, we know it's June, July or August, but work with me here).
  • Marbles
  • A small kiddie pool (Malibu Barbie's pool is just the right size
  • 30 packages of red gelatin, mixed and set
  • One bag of marbles
  • One "shooter" marble
  • For Steal the Bacon
  • A flying disc, soccer ball or football

    Candle in the Wind

  1. Step 1

Everyone teams up with one child to one adult. Children, load your squirt guns!

  2. Step 2

Each adult holds a lit candle in front of himself, about eye level.

  3. Step 3

Kids squirt at the candle, reloading as needed, until the candle is squirted out.

  4. Step 4

First team to put their candle out by squirting wins.

  5. Red Hunt in October

  6. Step 1

A day or so before your picnic or camping trip, make 30 or so boxes of red gelatin according to package directions. Pour into 9" by 12" baking pans. Cut gelatin into cubes.

  7. Step 2

Borrow Malibu Barbie's pool and fill it with gelatin cubes. Add one bag or regular size marbles plus one "shooter" marble. Shooters are about an inch in diameter.

  8. Step 3

Mix well. Players take turns using their feet to find marbles and pull them from the gelatin. First person to get the "shooter" marble wins them all.

  9. Steal the Bacon

  10. Step 1

Divide everyone into two teams, making sure an equal number or children and adults are on each side. Go to opposite ends of a field.

  11. Step 2

Set boundaries and make sure everyone knows where they are.

  12. Step 3

Place a flying disc, soccer ball or football at center field. Assign one player from each team to referee the opposing team. Flip a coin to see which referee gives the whistle. As soon as the ref whistles, everyone rushes to center field to try to get the "bacon."

  13. Step 4

Whoever touches the ball first gets the ball. That team runs with the ball, tapping other players out, gently! Opposing team members try to steal the ball without getting tapped out. Game continues until everyone is too tired to move.

  14. Step 5

    Smores!
