You want to look professional, stylish, classy, attractive. And you want to do it with a tie. There is just one way to go: a Windsor knot. This jack-of-all-trades knot is named after Edward VII, ruler of the British Empire from 1901 until his death in 1910. When tied correctly, it leaves a pleasantly shaped triangle knot that tells people you mean business.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tie
  • Mirror (optional)
  • Collared shirt (button-down preferred)
  1. Step 1

Put on the shirt and slide the tie under the collar. Don't button the top button. Make sure the wider part of the tie hangs on the left.

  2. Step 2

Check the length of the narrow part of the tie. It doesn't change as you tie the tie, so make sure you like where it hangs because that is where it will hang when you're finished. The wider part of the tie should hang below your waist.

  3. Step 3

Fold the wide part over the narrow part and pull it through the loop you made by folding.

  4. Step 4

Fold the wide part under the narrow part, turning the wide part 180 degrees. Then pull it through the loop you made. The wide part now should be under the narrow part and facing backwards. There also should be a triangle knot visible.

  5. Step 5

Fold the wide part around the triangle, front side facing out. Then pull wide part through the loop and tuck wide part through the wrap you just made over the triangle knot.

  6. Step 6

Pull knot to collar by holding on to the narrow part of the tie and slide knot up.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're unsatisfied with the knot you made, start over!
  • Don't pull the tie too tight to your neck and risk choking.
