How to Breathe In Anusara Yoga

Focus is one thing that most of us constantly pursue. Yoga has provided focus for many for thousands of years. A more recent form of Hatha Yoga, Anusara, emphasizes alignment and energy in achieving ultimate focus. One of the primary ways this is done is through breathing. The following are correct ways to breathe in Anusara Yoga.

  • Yoga mat
  • Loose clothing
  1. Step 1

    Lie in the corpse position and relax with arms facing upward. While in the position, the Bhastrika breathing method is appropriate. Breathe in and out through the nostrils forcefully for two to three repititions. On the third repitition, hold the breath and use fingers to gently close both nostrils. After holding, breathe through the left nostril and relax. This helps maintain energy level.

  2. Step 2

    Exhale between yoga positions. Cleansing exhales allow negative energy to leave the body. Jalandhara Bandha is the best exercise for this losing negative energy. Inhale and hold air in by pressing the chin to the chest. Release the air while raising the chin. This speaks directly to the Anusara philosophy of focus on the right alignment and the right energy.

  3. Step 3

    Get into the lotus position. Important breathing is done during this meditative pose. Inhale deeply and exhale while pulling the stomach. Pretend to touch the stomach to the spine. Repeat this exercise for two to three counts.

  4. Step 4

    Prevent negative energy from entering the body. While in the lotus position, inhale deeply, hold the stomach, and contract the sphincter muscle. Hold the breathing position for as long as it is comfortable. This is a technique that works well in preventing precious energy attained during Anusara from leaving the body.
