Your neck ages faster than your face. As you age, your neck may lack definition and appear fleshy. The condition of your neck is hereditary and can also be due to being overweight. Whether you have a turkey wattle or double chin, you don't have to settle for it. There are steps you can take to firm and tighten the area underneath your chin.

A neck lift or face lift can help tighten the neck area underneath your chin. During a neck lift, excess skin is removed from your neck and the neck muscles are altered. Because a neck lift often doesn't give the desired results and because the tightened neck may look unnatural compared to the facial skin, a face lift may be recommended. During face lift surgery, excess skin and fat is removed from the face and neck and the jawline is tightened.

As you age, the neck area underneath the chin may start getting a fat, band-like appearance. Botox injections can relax the neck muscles that cause this and conceal the fatty appearance. Botox injections are a temporary solution. To prevent the neck from going back to its original state, the injections have to be repeated. The procedure can take up to 15 minutes. The use of prescription-level skin care lotions applied to the face and neck promotes cellular turnover. Old skin cells are replaced by new ones, and therefore signs of aging, sun exposure and rough textures are erased.

As with any muscles, the best way to tighten them is to exercise them. Toning your neck muscles can be done with neck exercises such as tilting your head backward so you look up to the ceiling. Hold the position for five seconds and come back to your normal front-facing position. Another neck exercise is when you bring your right ear as close as you can to your right shoulder. Hold the tension for five seconds and repeat the exercise on the other side. Perform five to 10 repetitions of each neck exercise, three times per day.
