A kickturn is a fairly basic maneuver on a skateboard that allows you to change directions, either while moving or while remaining stationary. It is an essential skill, whether you are riding in order to do tricks or are just using the skateboard as a means of transportation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skateboard
  • Optional protective gear (helmet, knee and elbow pads)

How to kickturn on a skateboard

  1. Step 1

Place your back foot on the back tail of the skateboard, just behind the back wheels. Your front foot should be somewhere over the front wheels, wherever it is most comfortable.

  2. Step 2

Place weight on your back foot, lifting the board up at the front so the wheels lift off the ground.

  3. Step 3

As the front wheels lift off the ground, twist the trunk of your body in the direction you wish the front of the board to turn.

  4. Step 4

Allow the back wheels to pivot beneath your back foot.

  5. Step 5

Once you have turned as far as you wish, shift your weight back to the center of the board so that the front wheels touch the ground once again. You have successfully kickturned!

Tips & Warnings
  • The kickturn can be done to any degree (45, 90, 180 or 360).
  • The kickturn is a relatively safe trick to learn, for skaters of all ages. However, there is a chance of falling, and kids should be encouraged to wear safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads.
