A dirty carpet can be one of the leading causes of allergies or respiratory illness in adults and children. Many people make the mistake of thinking that if a carpet is spot free, it must be clean. The truth of the matter is that carpets can be full of pet dander and other substances that cling to dirt and cause odor. Even some carpet cleaners can hold smells in the carpet and mask them with a new scent, which isn't really cleaning the carpet. In this article, you will find the way to deodorize a carpet and keep it thoroughly clean, not just smelling that way.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Baking soda
  • Carpet freshener
  • Cleaning rag
  • Scrub brush
  1. Step 1

Begin at one corner of the carpet if it's a large wall-to-wall carpet. Do the same for an area rug. Sprinkle baking soda lightly across the surface that you want to deodorize. It's crucial that you sprinkle the baking soda lightly because it will actually collect dust and debris if the layer is too thick.

  2. Step 2

After you've spread a thin layer over the carpet, rub it into the carpet with the cleaning rag. For a heavily soiled carpet, make a paste of about 1 part water and 3 parts baking soda. Rub that lightly over the surface of the carpet.

  3. Step 3

Run the vacuum over the carpet. Make sure your vacuum is set to "carpet," so it's lowered down as far as it can go. Move the vacuum slowly over the carpet to ensure you've gotten all the baking soda up. Sprinkle a layer of carpet deodorizer over the top and vacuum using the scrub brush to make sure it gets into the carpet.

  4. Step 4

Vacuum again. Use the scrub brush to bring any particles to the top and vacuum a third time. By the third time vacuuming, your carpet should smell like new.
