Baking a fortune cookie is relatively easy. Getting the fortune inside is where the challenge comes in. Still with much persistence it can be done so think about what kind of fortunes you want inside your cookie and get started.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/8 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 dash of salt
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Baking sheet
  1. Step 1

Create the fortunes. These must be done first because you will have just seconds to get them in the cookies when they are done cooking. Go to your computer and in your word processing program, type up a bunch of one sentence fortunes. Make sure you don't use big print and that the fortunes aren't more than 3 1/2 inches long and 1/2-inch wide. Be creative and have fun with it. Choose lines of poetry, scripture verses or personal messages instead of fortunes.

  2. Step 2

Print out your fortunes and get out your scissors to cut them into little strips. Lay them on the counter and be ready to insert them in to your cookies.

  3. Step 3

Make the cookies. Turn the oven on 400 degrees and butter up two cookie sheets. Beat egg white and vanilla and then add the salt, sugar, and flour. Mix together. Place dough on the cookie sheet and smooth out in to 3 inch circles. Now your cookies are ready for the oven. They only take about 5 minutes to cook, so keep an eye on them. After 5 minutes, take them out. Note they may be golden on the outside and not on the inside. That is okay.

  4. Step 4

Once you get the cookies out of the oven the clock starts racing. You have about 20 seconds to get the fortunes in successfully. Carefully take the cookie off of the sheet and put your fortune in it somewhere in the middle. Now fold it in half. Put the folded edge across the edge of a glass and make sure the edges point down. Place on a plate and wait to harden.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't put too many cookies on one sheet of paper because you won't have enough time to get your fortunes in all of them.
  • Wear some type of gloves when handling cookies straight from the oven. They are going to be hot and you don't want to burn yourself.
