This will help you learn to better understand how to play some of the songs by the group Skinny Puppy- on guitar. Although guitar isn't always at the forefront of Skinny Puppy's music, it is almost always present to add some texture to the songs- whether it be basic power chords, or single note descending lines.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skinny Puppy albums, cd/mp3 player, computer with internet connection, guitar & amp.

    Pick the songs you know

  1. Step 1

Make sure you know the songs you want to play, you need to have a good idea of how they're structured so you can better play along with the rhythms and tempos.  Start off with easier songs and work your way to the more difficult.

  2. Step 2

Become friends with the rewind button. You won't get the songs right the first time, so be prepared to back up and play parts again... and again... and again...

  3. Step 3

Be patient. You won't learn most songs the first or second time you play them.

  4. Step 4

Devote time to learning the songs. It won't do you any good if you don't make time to learn the songs.

  5. Get your gear ready

  6. Step 1

Make sure your guitar is in the right tuning. It is easy to overlook this part, but it can cause big headaches when what you play doesn't sound right because you're not tuned the same way as you're hearing on the album. Many artists will stray from standard tuning, so pay attention. An example of this is the song, "Dig It" which is in dropped D tuning (DADGBE) instead of standard tuning (EADGBE).

  7. Step 2

Make sure what you hear is actually guitar. Skinny Puppy, as with many of the industrial/electronic bands is not guitar driven, and many of the sounds you hear may actually be synthesizers, or computer generated sounds. This can be tricky when you think you're hearing harmonics, so be careful.

  8. Step 3

You may have to substitute synthesizer parts for guitar, especially if you're playing alone. A good example of this is the song, "Testure" which may require you to play the synth parts on guitar. Otherwise, you will have some big gaps in the song where the guitar is normally silent or far down in the mix.

  9. Step 4

Find guitar tab for the songs you want to play. If playing by ear leaves big holes in the song you're trying to play- find some guitar tabulature for that particular song. Many websites offer guitar tab for free, and there are also pay sites that charge per song, or album.

Tips & Warnings
  • Double check to make sure what you're hearing is actually guitar
  • Substitute synthesizer parts with guitar if you're playing alone or without keyboards
  • Check the tuning of each song!
