Step 1
Plan your route. Decide on where you are going and for how long you'll be gone. Be sure that you, or someone who is going with you, has been on the trail before so that you know what to expect.

Wear comfortable shoes. You don't want to have to bandage blisters along the way. Dress for comfort for the entire day.

Dress in layers. Sometimes hiking trails can very in temperature drastically in a matter of minutes. Be sure to dress in layers so that you can add for warmth, or remove to get cool.

Take plenty to eat and drink. Water is especially important. Be sure to have enough snacks. Kids often get hungry every two hours while exercising. Protein snacks such as nuts are particularly important to have on hand.

Be sure to have sunscreen and bug repellent at hand. You will likely need one or both of these, especially if hiking in the spring or summer in the woods.

Take a first-aid kit. Include band aids, an Epi-pen, a cold pack and an ace bandage.
