Things You'll Need:
- Synthetic wig or hairpiece
- Wide-tooth comb
- Woolite or other cold water wash product
-
Step 1
When you first purchase a synthetic wig or hairpiece, shake it out gently and "scrunch" your fingers through to mess it up a little bit. (This removes a "wiggy" look.)
-
Step 2
Most wigs have adjustable tabs in the back that can be modified according to head size. Position the wig on your head and adjust the straps in back for a tight but not uncomfortable fit. If you're using a hairpiece or extension, use the clips provided and brush your own hair over the clipped area, fastening in place with a covered elastic band or scarf.
-
Step 3
Wash the wig or hairpiece about once a week, if you're wearing it every day. Fill a washbasin with cold water and add one capful of Woolite. Don't use shampoo, because synthetic wigs are not hair--they're fiber. The Woolite will clean and condition the hair. Swirl hairpiece around in the sudsy water for a few minutes, then rinse in clear cool water until suds run out. Blot dry on a towel and use a wide-tooth comb to smooth out tangles.
-
Step 4
Prop your clean, washed wig onto an empty spray bottle to air dry. Don't use wig forms; they stretch out the cap and don't let air circulate to dry.
-
Step 5
Synthetic wigs will "snap" back into their style, but you can use a little gel or hairspray as a styling aid. Dampen with cold water to set the style into place. You don't need to use rollers on a synthetic hairpiece.Remember not to use a curling iron or expose your hairpiece to high temperatures (such as a preheated oven or fireplace) as the fiber will frizz.
