Cutting down on the amount of fat in your diet has been talked about at length for the past 20 years. Now we know that some fats are good for us (such as that which is in olive oil) and some that is extremely bad for you. Any meat you eat in your diet contains fat, and much of that (especially in red meat and fatty cuts of pork) will contain saturated fat- the big enemy! This article will give you some pointers for trimming the fat from the meat in your diet, which will lessen your intake of saturated fat and keep you fitter and healthier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First decide what type of meat you want for your meal: beef, chicken, or turkey. Depending on which type of meat, you'll have several options as to what to eat.

  2. Step 2

Make sure your knife is sharp. A sharp kitchen knife is essential, as you don't want a dull knife that you have to use like a saw to cut meat. This makes the job much harder and increases your chances of hurting yourself.

  3. Step 3

Beef. If you choose beef, a steak from a good cut of meat (fillet, porterhouse) is going to have less fat than others, such as a ribeye. If the steak has noticeable fat around the edges, use your kitchen knife to trace the outline of the steak and separate the fat from the meat.

  4. Step 4
Turkey! Don't forget to peel the skin off!

Chicken and turkey. If you have poultry with the skin on it, you will want to remove it, as skin is nothing but fat. Use your hands to pull as much of the skin away from the meat as possible, and then use your knife to remove the remaining parts. If you cook an entire bird with the skin on (such as for Thanksgiving) make sure to peel the skin off the meat before you eat it.

  5. Step 5
    Ham, trim the edges

For trimming fat from ham, you will want to wait until the ham is cooked, and then trim the fat off each piece individually. Pork chops are much the same as beef steak, trim off before cooking, and cut off any you missed as you eat.

  6. Step 6
pat the patties down with a paper towel

Bacon and sausage should probably be avoided on a lower fat diet, but if you do eat them, drain the grease off and do not let them sit in it. Also, pat down the meat with a paper towel to absorb the grease on the outer surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use a dull kitchen knife! It's dangerous!
