Staying dry is one of the most important parts of hiking. If you go to sleep wet, you put yourself at risk for getting cold and sick. This tutorial shows you how to stay dry and safe easily while camping.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tent
  • Poncho or raincoat
  • Waterproof boots
  • Dry set of clothes
  • Umbrella (if practical)
  1. Step 1

Setting a tent up is one of the easiest ways to stay dry when you are camping. If you do not bring a tent with you to go camping, you will need a waterproof sleeping bag. You need to make sure that your sleeping area is as dry as possible. Sleeping under a tree is a good idea if you are looking for shelter.

  2. Step 2

Keeping your sleeping bag dry is very important, especially if it isn't waterproof. When selecting a sleeping bag, make sure to get one with a lot of thick padding for insulation. This will keep you warm and dry while you sleep.

  3. Step 3

If it's practical, bring an umbrella along with you to go camping. It is a good way to keep dry while you are hiking. An umbrella is optional, especially if you wear a raincoat or a poncho that is rainproof.

  4. Step 4

Waterproof clothing of all sorts is preferable, but waterproof boots are essential. Boots that allow water in will not protect your feet and socks, and can cause problems if your feet are wet for a long time. Waterproof clothing such as raincoats are easily accessible at stores such as Dick's Sporting Goods.

  5. Step 5

The most important thing to remember when you want to stay warm is to pack an extra set of dry clothing to sleep in. Your clothes while hiking are going to get wet and cold. If you pack an extra set of clothes, you'll be able to take off the wet clothes and sleep in dry clothes. This keeps you comfortable and safe, and protects you from getting sick.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always remember to bring a separate set of dry clothing to sleep in. It is important not to sleep in wet clothing.
  • Again, never sleep in wet clothing. It makes you vulnerable to getting sick and will make you uncomfortable and cold all night.
  • Do not put wet clothes in your sleeping bag to dry out, for the same reasons as above.
