Things You'll Need:
- 1 Styrofoam hat form (from beauty supply stores, around $5)
- Leftover fabric, lace and trims
- Glue gun or Tacky Glue (from craft store)
-
Step 1
Either purchase 5 or 6 small pieces of remnant fabric or wait until your sewing basket has a heap of odds and ends to use up.
-
Step 2
Plug in glue gun and position hat form on work table.
-
Step 3
Trim fabric pieces to roughly the same size. I used about eight 6- to 8-inch squares for the hat form pictured.
-
Step 4
Begin gluing with solid color scraps to provide contrast. Start with back of head and move towards the front, overlapping pieces slightly to cover Styrofoam completely. Work quickly so that glue doesn't get too thick. If using tacky glue, squirt out onto a paper plate and thin with a little water, then use an old paintbrush or Q-tips to apply.
-
Step 5
Cover top and sides of head first, then turn the form on the side to finish bottom. Cover completely with fabric, like a collage. This should take about half an hour. Now check to make sure all Styrofoam is covered. Use snippets of lace, trim or ribbon to disguise any obvious seams, but keep the surface smooth so that a hat can go on easily.
