Whether you're new to mountain biking or a novice rider who needs some tips, there's always room for a refresher on shifting gears. The following will help you understand how to shift when riding a mountain bike.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Anticipate the elements you are going up against. Anticipation is the best skill you can have when learning to properly shift gears on your bike. You are looking for different types of terrain, inclines and declines.

  2. Step 2

Gather some speed in a gear you are comfortable with when you see an incline approaching. As you engage the incline, slowly begin to shift gears lower--as low as is comfortable for you. You should not have to strain; if you are, you may want to shift down.

  3. Step 3

Shift to a higher gear just before you engage the decline so you don’t have to struggle shifting downhill.. Remember, it is much easier to shift gears while going uphill.

  4. Step 4

Try to find a smooth spot before you shift when biking on rough terrain.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shifting gears while biking uphill can cause tension on your dérailleur gears, so be sure to shift either before the hill or before it causes stain on your legs.
  • Be sure to lube your chain before your ride. Your bike will appreciate it, and it will increase performance.
