Things You'll Need:
- 2 ropes
- String, scarves, or anything else you want to tie
-
Step 1
Hold one rope in your left hand and the other rope in your right hand.
-
Step 2
Lay the rope from your right hand over the top of the rope in your left hand.
-
Step 3
While holding both pieces together with your right hand, reach under with your left hand and pull the right hand piece under. You now have an overhand knot. You will be holding a piece in your left hand and a piece in your right hand.
-
Step 4
Now reverse the process and take the piece in the left hand and put it over the piece in the right hand and through.
-
Step 5
Pull the two ends taut to complete the knot. When tied properly, the knot will form a square.

In step 3, one is holding both pieces with the right hand. The step then states to "pull the right hand piece".
But which 'right'? There are several options that could be it. Options that wouldn't pose the same issue if the ropes were labeled with a number, so as not to confuse the adjective 'right' due to the fact that it can apply to more than just the rope [e.g. the rope; the other rope if the places are switched; the right hand; etc.]
-- piece that started in the right hand.
-- piece that is currently being held more prominently in the right hand.
-- when the two pieces are together, the one that is farther to the right.
-- Either.
-- Or the piece that is to end up in the right hand.
And whereas, yes, anyone who knows how to tie the knot wi
