It is important not to overheat while sleeping, but it is also important to remember certain tips. For one, if it is colder than 45 degrees or so, you should always make sure to wear longjohns. Longjohns are long underwear, made out of flannel. If you don't have those, wear sweatpants or flannel pajama pants to stay warm. Also wear socks to keep your feet warm and mittens to keep your hands warm. If it gets especially cold, wear a heavy sweater to keep your midsection comfortable.

Though percentages vary, it is general knowledge that much of the heat from your body escapes from your head. Simply wearing a snow hat that covers your ears is hugely important to staying warm, especially in the cold outdoors.

It's important to go to sleep in dry clothing. If you have been hiking and it has rained, or if you are wet, take those clothes off and put on dry clothes before going to bed. Going to bed with wet or damp clothes on is a sure way to get sick and be cold all night.

Fluffing the sleeping bag can make all the difference in the world. A thin sleeping bag doesn't provide for as much insulation as a thick bag. Fluff it like you would fluff a pillow and you will notice a nice temperature boost.
