How to Choose What to Bring to College

At first, you may want to bring everything to college with you, but it isn't possible. The space is limited. When considering what to bring, think about the following questions. Do I need it? Have I used it in the past 6 months? Will it take up too much space? Will I use it frequently?

1. Keep in mind the season and location of your college. Layers are a good idea. If you haven't worn something in over a year, don't bring it with you. It will just take up space. You never know when you'll need nice clothes, so keep some on hand.
2. It can be tempting to bring all your shoes, but keep it to the basics. Bring good walking shoes, nice formal shoes, sandals, a maybe a couple extra pairs that are your favorites.
3. Bring your favorite books that you read repeatedly. But, remember that shelf space is limited and you'll have many more books in no time as you start to accumulate college materials. You can always check out books from the library.
4. If you have a desktop and a laptop, consider only taking the laptop. It saves space and you can carry it around with you.
5. Bring enough binders/folders for your classes for the semester. Leave the rest at home and exchange them during winter break.
6. Discuss with your roommate about who's bringing what so that there are no doubles.
7. Bringing photos of your life is a good idea. It helps you remember your past, but try to confine it to one photo album.

Tips & Warnings

• During breaks when you go home, exchange the past season clothes for new ones. That way, you don't have a bunch of sweaters in your closet during the warmer months.
• If you don't normally use an item, most likely, you won't need it in your dorm.
• If you bring too much, you won't have anything left for when you go home to visit.
• Space is very limited in a dorm.
