How to Wash Suede

Leather and suede are expensive to buy--and also to keep clean. You can take items to the dry cleaners, but there are products that can allow you to clean these materials at home. Here are a few suggestions.

How to Wash Suede

1. First, choose a cleaner. I've used Leather Therapy's US Patented Leather Infusion Wash and Rinse on a pair of suede boots and achieved great results. It's also very affordable! (see Resources) It also comes with specific directions on how to use the product, depending on your garment.

2. Also consider preventive measure with a protective spray to safeguard against water and other stains. I've used Suede/Nubuck Waterproofing Spray (see Resources).

3. Using a stiff brush can also be helpful in a "dry wash." Choose one that will not scratch the material, and brush gently to get rid of dirt and other grime.

Tips & Warnings

• *Never use Vaseline to get out stains, as you might on patent leather!

• *If all else fails, take your suede garment to a professional cleaner to at least get an assessment of the damage.
