Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Medium-sized pork roast, such as Boston Butt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Ten flour tortillas
  • One tomato
  • Half a head of lettuce
  • One bag of cheddar cheese
  • One container of sour cream
  • One small onion
  • Guacamole mix or avocado
  • Spices and seasonings
  • Roasting pan
  • Knife
  • Can of chicken broth
  1. Step 1

Cover your pork roast in vegetable oil. A great choice for carnitas is the Boston Butt, the actual shoulder of the animal. Pick a cut that has some fat on it and is well marbled. This dish requires a little fat to add to taste.

  2. Step 2

Rub your favorite spices and seasonings all over the roast. Some great choices are salt and pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, or onion powder.

  3. Step 3

Slice your roast into a few workable pieces. Then, roast at a low temperature in the oven for 8-10 hours. A good heat for roasting is around 200 degrees or less.

  4. Step 4

If you don't want to roast your pork butt, feel free to braise it. This is a traditional cooking method often used with roasts and meats, allowing for maximum tenderness. After you pan fry the roast a bit, add a can of chicken broth and some vegetable oil.

  5. Step 5

Fill the pan to its mid-point and place in the oven or leave on the stovetop. Cover and allow to cook for several hours or until tender. When the meat is done, whether by braising or roasting, place it on a serving dish.

  6. Step 6

Taking two forks, tear apart the meat in large chunks. Pork carnitas are very soft with crispy or hard outer edges. Pile the meat in a bowl or place it in the serving dish.

  7. Step 7

Warm ten flour tortillas and place in a dish. Slice one small onion, one tomato, and half a head of lettuce into edible portions. Pour a bag of cheddar cheese into a serving dish and spoon out a container of sour cream into a dip bowl. You can serve guacamole in its container or smash up an avocado.

  8. Step 8

Encourage your family or guests to make their own pork carnitas, which are essentially pork tacos or tortillas. Pile chunks of pork, veggies, cheese, and dip into flour tortillas and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • For an added kick, roll out a fresh lime and squirt lime juice over the pork or the tortillas.
  • Substitute pork butt for a beef chuck roast if you prefer beef.
  • Never leave a braising or roasting meat dish alone unsupervised.
