Many oarsmen and women experience shoulder/neck syndrome on a yearly basis. It is no wonder, as rowers utilize their neck, shoulders, arms and back during the rowing motion.

    How to Diagnose Shoulder/Neck Syndrome in Rowers

  1. Step 1

    Perform a physical evaluation of patients if they are rowers complaining of shoulder/ neck pain. Aching pain in your upper back, neck and shoulder is the first symptom. The pain is typically on the outside of the arm if the rower is a sweep oar rower.

  2. Step 2

    Ask questions pertaining to shoulder/neck syndrome. Feeling arm spasms, “heavy” arms and weakness in the affected arm are all characteristics of shoulder/neck syndrome.

  3. Step 3

    Advise patients to rest, massage and stretch to improve and relieve shoulder/neck pain.

  • Stretching before rowing decreases chance of injury.
